Merchant’s freedom of choice & our response to media articles on PA partnerships.
4 min read Jan 2025

As detailed in our previous blog post, we would like to clarify that Juspay Orchestrator is not a payments intermediary. We are a TSP (Technology Service Provider) to the merchants, similar to how they use the Cloud and infrastructure SaaS services. It is the merchants who partner with Juspay Orchestrator and PAs separately. Therefore, the media reports talking about payment aggregators partnering or “ending partnership” with Juspay in this context is factually incorrect.

Factual corrections:

  • Merchants pay us for our software as it provides them value. We have no dependence on these PAs* for this revenue
  • Hence the statement about these PAs* contributing to our revenue is invalid

For the last 12 years, we have forged deep partnerships with leading merchants, working as their extended payments teams, providing technology to simplify payments operations, providing deep payment domain expertise & collaborating with them on long term ecosystem initiatives.

Can PAs dictate the software used by the merchants?

Merchants' choice to use Juspay Orchestrator or build it in-house, is similar to them deciding on technology software/services like C++, Java or AWS/GCP etc. or whether they can work with technology service partners like Infosys/TCS. We strongly believe that it is the independence of the merchants to use any technology and services of their choice & we are committed to continue delivering value through Juspay Orchestrator to meet and exceed their expectations.

Our view on interoperability and open systems - third-party routers & third-party apps

Interoperability and Open systems have been the bedrock of innovation. We have been inspired by such systems like the Internet, Linux - the foundation upon which the online world thrives.

We have contributed to the building blocks of UPI, which is another interoperable system that has created immense value for the entire payments ecosystem and the nation itself! Customers & Merchants can use Third-Party Apps and QRs to make and accept payments, irrespective of their Banks!

The same lens of interoperability and open systems must be applied in the interest of merchants, with respect to Orchestration and Payment Aggregators. PAs are also building their own Third-Party routers - Razorpay (Optimizer) and Cashfree (FloWise) and we welcome that. We look forward to them also, standing-up for interoperability.

Our commitment to Interoperability and Open Source

In our previous blog post, we have explained how Interoperability and Open systems has been a core principle of Juspay since inception. For the last 3 years, we have been working on an open source Orchestrator Hyperswitch, started with supporting European and US markets. We are seeing a strong demand for Hyperswitch globally, and we will bring this open-source stack for our merchants to India too!

We look for your support in building a diverse, interoperable and value creating ecosystem. Thank you!

*Edit 1: These PAs refer to Payment Aggregators like Cashfree, PhonePe, and Razorpay, as reported in the media.
*Edit 2: Any reference to PGs in the original post referred to Payment Aggregators. It has now been changed to Payment Aggregators (PAs) for clarity.
