Mandate variants and types

NACH Debit mandates come in three variants: physical mandate, API eMandate and eSign eMandate. Mandates can be of type CREATE, AMEND or CANCEL. Some interactions are permitted between the variants and types.

Mandates are of three variants:

  1. Physical mandate (physical) (UMRN's fifth character is 0) - a scan of a paper mandate signed with ink.

  2. eSign eMandate (emandate_esign) (UMRN's fifth character is 6) - electronic mandate authorised via Aadhaar eSign with redirection to ESP eSign gateway. Auth modes include: OTP, biometric, iris and facial recognition.

  3. API eMandate (emandate_api) (UMRN's fifth character is 7) - electronic mandate authorised via browser with redirection to NPCI ONMAGS API gateway. Auth modes include: net-banking login (UMRN's seventh character is 1) or debit card and PIN (UMRN's seventh character is 2) or Aadhaar number (UMRN's seventh character is 3).

Mandates are of three types:

  1. CREATE - to register a new mandate.

  2. AMEND - to amend an active mandate.

  3. CANCEL - to cancel an active mandate.

Mandate CREATE

All three variants are registered with the CREATE type.

Mandate AMEND

Some fields in the physical variant and emandate_esign variant can be amended by the AMEND type, however this type is rarely used as it requires the customer's authorisation and therefore it is simpler to register a new CREATE mandate and cancel the old mandate. The emandate_api variant cannot be amended.

LotusPay does not currently support AMEND type at all. If you have a direct relationship with your sponsor bank, you can ask them to assist you in amending mandates.

Mandate CANCEL

All three variants can be cancelled with the CANCEL type, either as a physical request or as an online request. LotusPay supports online request only.
