Agoda—one of Asia’s leading travel platforms—needed a way to unify its fragmented payment flows, especially as travelers across Southeast Asia and the Middle East demanded local-first ways to pay. That challenge became more urgent once new QR-based wallets and bank apps began gaining major traction in these markets.
Agoda chose Juspay’s orchestration platform to integrate local payment methods across five countries in one go. A short timeline meant Agoda had to onboard multiple PSPs, refine its checkout flows, and ensure high performance even during peak travel promotions.
Streamlined Payment Orchestration for Alternative Payment Methods
Working in Vietnam, Japan, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore means Agoda has to handle a variety of currency types and alternative payment methods.
Juspay plugged into Agoda’s ecosystem as a single orchestration layer, instantly connecting wallets like VNPay in Vietnam, PayPay in Japan, and LinePay in Taiwan, plus Apple Pay and UPI. Previously, tying each new method into Agoda’s stack could take weeks or months of development; with Juspay, the process became largely no-code and standardized.
Under the hood, our dynamic routing engine checks real-time gateway performance, success rates, and network availability. If one route is down or showing elevated error rates, Juspay automatically switches to a fallback, preserving the transaction with minimal friction. According to Agoda’s internal data, these fallback measures contributed to a significant increase in conversion rates on new local payment methods.
Payment Orchestration acts as a Payment Operating System
Payment Orchestration goes beyond simple PSP/Gateway aggregation. It centralizes every aspect of the transaction lifecycle—authentication, routing, settlement—into a single, intelligent layer. For Agoda, this means the system can automatically decide which local payment option to invoke based on geography, network performance, and user preference. The result is fewer failed transactions, faster checkout, and a more intuitive experience for travelers.
Plus, payment orchestration gives development teams the flexibility to introduce or retire payment methods without rewriting large chunks of code. Agoda can now seamlessly plug in emerging e-wallets in local markets and ensure travelers have the payment options they prefer. Rather than juggling multiple integrations, everything is handled within Juspay’s orchestration platform, allowing Agoda to maintain a consistent user journey and scale payments globally.
Reconciliation Under the Hood
Transaction success is just half the story; massive cross-border volumes mean a heavy lift for Agoda’s finance operations team. “Reconciliation” is a complex & manual but critical piece where each transaction, across multiple currencies and PSPs, must be correctly matched and tallied in internal records. Each processor had its own settlement files, often in incompatible formats.
Juspay’s system automatically unifies settlement data from each payment method—VND in Vietnam, JPY in Japan, TWD in Taiwan, INR in India, plus more—into a single format for Agoda’s FinOps group. Any mismatches or chargeback issues are flagged in real time, preventing confusion at month’s end.
Juspay’s unified Reconciliation platform consolidated transaction data, normalized it, and delivered unified reports that matched Agoda’s existing CRM tools. That cut down the finance team’s manual checks, ensuring less downtime in verifying settled amounts.
For local users in Vietnam, for instance, a scan-and-pay QR code from VNPay is second nature. In Taiwan, the embedded LinePay wallet sees heavy usage. By weaving these flows directly into checkout—without forcing travelers through a separate app—Agoda significantly streamlined the final step of the booking process.
What’s Next?
As travel continues to rebound post-pandemic, frictionless payments stand out as a not-so-secret advantage for online travel agencies. Users want to see their local currency, pay with their local wallet, and get back to planning a trip—without worrying about whether a card will be accepted or an exchange rate will spike.
Agoda represents a critical endorsement in Asia’s competitive fintech ecosystem.
Bigger Picture
Payments used to be a linear chain: a credit card, a gateway, a bank. Now, especially in Asia’s mobile-first markets, local e-wallets and real-time payment networks are capturing consumer loyalty in a big way.Payment Orchestration augments an enterprises’ capabilities, acting as a universal translator and traffic conductor, bridging the gap between a merchant’s global ambitions and a user’s local preferences.
For Agoda, that means removing yet another barrier to booking. As travelers bounce from the app to payment and back, fewer users abandon a trip mid-checkout. And for an online travel agency working in half a dozen local markets, an uptick in approvals is no small feat.
Travel is surging across Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and payments that feel “local” is the difference between a customer finalizing their itinerary or dropping off.
Juspay’s orchestration system is the quiet but vital layer ensuring Agoda stays top of wallet—no matter which wallet that might be.
